A collaborative Christmas card for 2011 celebrating the Winter Solstice tradition of Mumming.

Dating back to the middle ages, Mummers Plays were once performed all over the world. When used to celebrate the Winter Solstice or Christmas, these short folk plays often depicted a fight between summer and winter and ended with the resurrection of the slain character by a quack doctor.

Bands of Mummers would perform the play around their village to raise extra money for their families. The costumes would vary from place to place and it was common for people to obscure their faces with masks. The tradition has enjoyed a recent revival and Mummers are once again roaming village streets.Photography by Chris TurnerTweet<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/2492604/IfWinterComes_Web_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="800" width_o="607" height_o="810" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/2492604/IfWinterComes_Web_o.jpg" align="left" />

I was invited by Saatchi & Saatchi to contribute to their Lovemarks project. They believe Lovemarks are the future of brands, brands that inspire ‘Loyalty beyond reason’. Using myths and folktales 'Go I know not where, Bring back I know not what' breaks down these epic deeds into their essential components, allowing the modern reader to consider how far they would go for what they really, really want.Tweet <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIknownot1Web.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIknownot1Web_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIknownot2Web.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIknownot2Web_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIknownot3Web.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIknownot3Web_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIKnowNotWhereCover.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1833470/HelenFriel_GoIKnowNotWhereCover_o.jpg" align="left" />

I have recently finished a series of one day workshops at The Green School, Isleworth. Over a course of seven weeks I worked with a group of year nine students to design and create a paper sign for their school's Learning Centre. The sessions explored different aspects of paper engineering and design including cutting and origami, encouraging the students to experiment with different ways of creating the work.

Other workshops I have designed and taught include day sessions in collaboration with the V&A exhibition- Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft and make and take home sessions for young children.

I am available to teach all ages and if you would like to discuss workshop options please feel free to contact me at helen@helenfriel.co.uk<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1830861/GreenSchool3_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="449" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1830861/GreenSchool3_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1830861/GreenSchool2_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1830861/GreenSchool2_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1830861/GreenSchoolFront.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="439" width_o="600" height_o="439" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/137750/1830861/GreenSchoolFront_o.jpg" align="left" />
